Our greenhouses are nearly empty however we still have some nice flowering annuals available and priced at half off. While the selections are fewer than the spring inventory, we still have plenty to choose from. Plants in a decorative container make a lovely host gift and fill an empty spot in the middle of the summer. Stop by and see for yourself.

During the hot summer months with little rain, it is important to tend to your garden and potted containers to keep your annuals, perennials and grass thriving. Container plants will give you pleasure into the fall months with proper care. Cutting off (deadheading) blossoms that have faded will encourage plants to produce more blossoms rather than going to seed. Occasional trimming to maintain an attractive shape is also called for with several annuals. Most importantly, water and feed your container plants on a regular basis. Check your container plants daily and water when the soil feels dry. Watering container plants once a day is usually called for if the plant is in a sunny spot. Fertilizing should be done every 2-3 weeks with a liquid fertilizer during the growing season. Check your garden for pests and for ripe vegetables. Continue to weed and mulch your garden.

I always like to take a pause, sit back and enjoy my colorful garden and picking vegetables for our table. This year my selection of garden and container annuals were very different from those I planted in the past. I decided to choose some different colors and types of annuals that I haven’t used before and so I have some unexpected and pleasant surprises as my garden continues to fill out over the course of the summer. We hope that you have been enjoying your garden and patio plants as well.

Gardening Chores in Connecticut

Remove any dead flowers from plants to encourage new growth.

Check the mulch around your plants; if there is little or no mulch, make sure to put a 3- to 4-inch layer to conserve moisture.

Be sure to regularly water your garden and container plants. Fertilize regularly so that the plants continue to thrive.

Keep weeding your garden so that the weeds do not compete with your plants for water and nutrients.

The vegetable garden is likely to require daily harvesting now. Cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers should be picked as soon as the fruits are ready. This not only captures the best flavor, but it also makes way for new fruits.

Japanese beetles? Handpick and drop in a jar of detergent and water.

Tomato hornworms? Handpick and drown in soapy water or snip in half.

Lawns or bare spots should be reseeded now so the grass will have a chance to get established before winter sets in. Water often and mulch with hay.

Be sure to visit Glendale Farms now for half off annual flowers.

We accept cash and checks only.
